Have A Generator So The Weather Doesn't Leave You In The Dark

by Katrina Evans

If you live in an area that gets severe winter or summer storms, there are several things that you should do in order to make sure that you are prepared in case a severe storm happens and your power goes out. One of those things is to make sure that you have power at your house. It may take some time for the power to come back on and you don't want to be left in a position where you can't cook, take a nice shower, or have some light. The way to make sure that you can do that is to get a generator.

Reasons to Have a Generator

There are several reasons that you should have a generator ready to go if your power goes out. One is that you can hook your refrigerator up to the generator. That will make sure that you don't lose the food in your refrigerator. That will do two things. One is that it will make sure that you have food to eat. The other is that it will save you money. You won't have to replace all the food that you just spent money on buying.

Another reason to get a generator is if you have medical equipment that needs electricity to run. For example, if someone in your house requires a nebulizer, you will need to have a generator that will allow that nebulizer to run.

Generator Fuel Sources

A generator has to get its power from somewhere. That power is generated by an engine. As the engine runs, power is created. But that engine needs to have something to make it run.

There are several different fuels out there.

Gasoline

This is the same gasoline that fuels your car. You will need to make sure that you go out and get some before the storm comes. You don't want to keep gasoline stored at your house for too long because it can start to break down. However, if you get some right before the storm and keep enough for two or three days, you should be fine.

Diesel

Like gasoline, you can go to your local gas station and get the diesel necessary to run your generator. Also like gasoline. You don't want to leave it sitting in storage for a long time because it may break down.

Propane

You could also choose to get a propane generator. One benefit of propane is that it comes in tanks which can either be portable or you can get a larger permanent tank. Propane (which you can get from at outlet such as Gas Production CO Inc) can be stored for a long time in those tanks, as long as it is stored correctly.

Having a generator when the weather knocks out your power is a good idea. There are several different kinds of generators you can choose from.
